ERE certificates: how to earn extra with charging and where to register
Recent research shows that 84% of EV drivers in the Netherlands are missing out on money by not using ERE certificates when charging their electric cars.¹ ERE certificates (Emission Reduction Units) are a new scheme that allows you to receive compensation for the CO₂ reduction achieved by driving electric instead of fossil-fueled.²
What are ERE certificates?
EREs are digital certificates that show how many kilograms of CO₂ you have saved by charging electrically. These certificates are sold to parties such as oil companies that are legally obliged to compensate for their CO₂ emissions.³ For every kWh charged, you can earn approximately €0.10, which can amount to €150–€500 per year per charging point.⁴
(Please note: these are indicative estimates. The final revenue depends on the number of kWh charged. The current average target price is around €0.10 per kWh.)
Importance of a MID-certified charging point
To claim EREs, your charging point must have a MID-certified meter. This is a European measuring standard that ensures that the charged consumption is accurately and legally validly recorded. Only with such a meter can you claim ERE compensation.⁵
Discover our MID-certified charging points, suitable for ERE certificates. These charging stations comply with European measurement guidelines and are ideal for business charging solutions, HOAs (VvE’s), and semi-public locations where accurate kWh measurement and correct issuance of ERE certificates are required. Reliable, compliant, and future-proof.
Where can you register?
Since you, as a private owner or company, cannot register directly with the Dutch Emissions Authority (NEa), you must register with an entry service provider. These are specialized parties that handle the ERE administration, registration, and sale of certificates for you.
Well-known parties where you can register include:
-
ERE-registratie.nl – An entry service provider where you can register your charging station, and who handles all administration, data processing, and payment. You can register directly via their website.⁶
-
Den Hartog Zero Emission – Offers ERE registration and sales services for private and business charging points, including support and linking of charging data.¹
-
Other service providers such as LekkerLaden – You can also register your charging station here to have ERE certificates claimed and traded (depending on the service model and links).¹⁶⁷
How does registration work?
With most entry service providers, you go through the following steps:
-
You register your charging station via the entry service provider's portal.⁶
-
You authorize the service provider to process and register the charging data on your behalf.⁶
-
The charged kWhs are collected annually and converted into ERE certificates.⁶
-
The certificates are sold, and the proceeds are paid to you.¹
Conclusion
With ERE certificates, you can generate extra income from your charging station, provided your charging point meets MID certification and you register with an entry service provider. Many EV drivers are not yet registered, meaning they are missing out on opportunities to earn from their electric charging behavior. By registering today with an accredited service provider, you can immediately start capitalizing on your sustainable charging activities.
